Renting with pets in Ely

What living in Ely is like

Ely is a small cathedral city and the administrative centre of East Cambridgeshire. Its compact historic centre sits around Ely Cathedral, with residential areas, the River Great Ouse and newer development areas spreading beyond it. High Street, Market Street, Market Place, the cathedral quarter and civic facilities are close together, which can make everyday errands manageable on foot from some central homes.

The setting changes quickly outside the old centre. The river, drainage channels, meadows and low-lying fenland landscape all shape the area. They can provide attractive places to walk, but they also make a property-specific check of flood and surface-water information sensible, particularly for homes near the river, waterways or newer development areas.

For a pet owner, the useful question is not simply whether Ely has green space. It is whether the particular home gives you a workable daily routine. Walk the route from the front door to the nearest suitable open space, note the roads you would need to cross and consider how paths may feel after wet weather. For cats and smaller animals, look at busy roads, shared entrances, windows, balconies and garden security as well as the indoor layout.

Areas to consider when searching

Ely city centre and the Cathedral Quarter: These areas include High Street, Market Street, Market Place, the Cloisters, Palace Green and the historic streets around Ely Cathedral. Shops, markets, cultural venues and central open spaces are close by. The trade-off can be parking and access, so check whether a property has private parking and how deliveries, visitors and daily dog walks would work.

Riverside and Waterside: This area follows the River Great Ouse and includes Jubilee Gardens, riverside paths and nearby food and leisure uses. It may appeal if you want to be close to walking routes, but a riverside address calls for careful checks on flood information, water access, ground conditions and the rules applying to nearby land.

Station Gateway and Angel Drove: The southern side of Ely includes the railway station and Station Road, as well as the Tesco superstore and other commercial land around Angel Drove. The area includes a mixture of residential, retail, transport and commercial uses, so the surroundings can vary from one street or development to another. Check parking, traffic, noise and the route to green space at the exact address.

North Ely: This is a major northern expansion area planned for up to 3,000 homes, along with local centres, schools, employment uses and more green space. Not all planned facilities should be treated as established services. Ask what is already open, what is being built and how construction could affect access, noise and walking routes.

High Barns: High Barns is a named northern residential area connected with facilities in north Ely. When comparing a property there, check its actual distance from shops, open space, bus stops and the city centre rather than relying on the area name alone.

Paradise: Adjoining the city centre, Paradise is associated with leisure facilities, playing fields and open space. Its position may suit renters who want central access without living directly among the cathedral streets. Check the road, parking arrangements and walking route for each home.

Ely searches can also bring up Littleport, Witchford, Soham, Little Downham, Stretham and Haddenham. These are separate settlements, not Ely neighbourhoods. Search them separately so you know exactly where a listing is located.

Shops and supermarkets

Ely’s everyday shopping is concentrated around the city centre rather than spread across a large city retail area. High Street has independent and national shops, cafés and services. Market Place has weekly markets and surrounding shops and services, while Market Street is part of the central shopping and bus area.

The Cloisters is a covered shopping centre in central Ely. Its current shop mix includes B&M, Bonmarché, Card Factory, Holland & Barrett, Iceland, Mountain Warehouse, Peacocks, Savers, Sports Direct, Superdrug and White Stuff. Shops can change, so treat this as an indication of the centre’s everyday offer rather than a promise that every unit will remain the same.

Food-shopping options include Waitrose on Brays Lane and Tesco on Angel Drove. Sainsbury’s and Aldi are also recorded at Lisle Lane. If you do not drive, compare the property with the central streets, Lisle Lane, Angel Drove and the station area before deciding whether the location works for you. Carrying food home, travelling with a pet carrier or making frequent trips for pet supplies can make distance more important than it first appears.

Riverside and Waterside are more associated with food, leisure, antiques and walking than with supermarket shopping. They can be pleasant places to visit, but may not be the most practical base if quick access to everyday supplies is your priority.

Rail, buses and parking

Ely railway station is on Station Road. It has step-free access, toilets, ticket facilities, Wi-Fi, seating and a car park. Direct rail connections include London King’s Cross, Cambridge, Peterborough, Stansted Airport, Norwich, Birmingham, York and the North East. Routes and stopping patterns vary, so check the service for the date and journey you actually need.

The main bus-services terminal is on Market Street. The Ely Zipper network links Ely with places including Haddenham, Little Thetford, Stretham, Wilburton, Witcham, March, Doddington, Chatteris, Mepal, Sutton and Witchford. A2B also lists a route between Ely Market Street, Ely Leisure Village and Little Downham. Ely is a PlusBus location.

There is a bus stop near Tesco, described as about a five-minute walk from the station entrance. That could be useful when combining rail travel with a local bus, but do not rely on a town-wide description when choosing a home. Check the exact stop, service number, timetable and evening and weekend coverage. This matters particularly if you work shifts or travel with a pet carrier.

The A10 and A142 are the main road approaches. East Cambridgeshire Council provides both free and paid public car parks in and around Ely. Angel Drove and The Dock are paid long-stay car parks close to the station, while some central and riverside car parks have early-morning restrictions. If you have a car, confirm whether the tenancy includes an allocated space, whether a permit is needed and how visitor parking works.

Green spaces and dog walks

Ely Country Park is a useful place to investigate if you have a dog. It includes the Bulrush Trail, parts of the Kingfisher Trail, play equipment, cycle access and a dedicated Fisherman’s Car Park. Some paths are accessible for wheelchair users. The railway station is roughly ten minutes away on foot, and nearby bus stops are on Lisle Lane and Prickwillow Road.

Jubilee Gardens links the city centre, riverside and Ely Country Park. It has open space, picnic and play areas, a toddler play area, a water feature, a bandstand and hard paths. Ely Park and Cherry Hill lie south of Ely Cathedral and include the remains of a Norman castle mound, with paths connected to the Eel Trail.

Palace Green is an open space beside Ely Cathedral used for informal sitting, picnics and community events. Paradise playing fields provide sports and open space near the city centre and leisure centre, including areas used for cricket and football.

The marked Eel Trail is a circular route through the city centre, cathedral area, Jubilee Gardens, riverside and Ely Park. Chettisham Meadows, Roswell Pits, Ely Pits and Meadows are also important surrounding green and ecological areas. Access arrangements and dog rules can differ between sites. Do not assume that a park, meadow or riverside path allows off-lead exercise. Check signs, local rules, livestock notices and land-manager guidance at the exact location.

Before choosing a home, walk the likely route yourself. Look for secure gates, narrow pavements, road crossings, muddy sections and places where a dog could reach water or livestock. In the fenland setting, drainage, standing water and seasonal ground conditions deserve particular attention.

Pet checks before you apply

Get permission for your pet in writing before applying or paying a holding deposit. Do not rely on a verbal assurance that pets should be fine. Ask what the agreement says about the number and type of animals, garden use, cleaning, damage and leaving pets alone.

At a viewing, inspect floors, stairs, doors, windows, garden gates and possible escape points. Check where food, litter trays, crates, leads and outdoor equipment could go. In a flat, ask about shared entrances, lifts, communal gardens and neighbours. Cats, dogs, rabbits, birds and reptiles may each need different safeguards, so explain your situation clearly.

Pet Doctors Ely is an RCVS-accredited small-animal practice at 31 St Mary’s Street. It treats dogs, cats, birds and small mammals and is open on Saturdays, but not Sundays according to its current opening information. Companion Care (Ely) Ltd is another local veterinary option. Check the current address, services and opening arrangements for both practices before relying on them.

Ely Exotics is at Sedgeway Business Park, Common Road, Witchford, Ely. It specialises in reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, ornamental fish and related supplies, rather than being a conventional dog-and-cat pet shop.

Flooding, conservation and new development

Ely’s river and fenland setting mean that a flood and surface-water check should form part of your property search. Use current Environment Agency flood information for the exact address. Do not infer a property’s flood safety from general conditions elsewhere in the city.

Ely has a conservation area and an Article 4 Direction. These controls can affect visible changes to historic properties, including windows, doors and external finishes. Renters should ask the landlord or agent whether any restrictions affect the garden, external storage, satellite dishes or changes connected with keeping a pet.

North Ely is a long-term growth area, so homes near the northern edge may sit close to building work, changing road layouts or future facilities. Check current planning applications, construction phases and which promised services are already open. Similarly, the Station Gateway includes several kinds of land use, and its surroundings can differ significantly between one development and the next.

How to find a pet-friendly rental in Ely

Start with a clear brief covering your animal’s type, size and number, your preferred outdoor space, parking needs, travel requirements and the areas you would genuinely consider. Search Ely city centre, Riverside, Station Gateway, Angel Drove, High Barns, Paradise and North Ely separately where the rental platform allows it.

Prepare a short pet profile before contacting an agent or landlord. Include your pet’s age, temperament, routine, training, references and details of previous tenancies. Be open about size and breed where relevant. Ask for the landlord’s decision early, then request written confirmation before arranging a move.

Pet-friendly homes can appear intermittently, so alerts are more useful than checking manually once and then forgetting about the search. Set a Paw Keys alert for the areas and property types that fit your needs. Keep the filters sensible: making them too narrow could exclude a suitable home in another part of Ely. If the search is too limited, consider separate searches for Littleport, Witchford, Soham, March or Cambridge.

Use the same checklist at every viewing: written pet permission, garden security, parking, flood and drainage information, nearby walking routes, transport, noise, access and the condition of the property. That will help you compare homes on the practical details that matter after move-in, not just on photographs and floor plans.

For Ely landlords and agents

If you have a genuinely pet-friendly rental in Ely, describe it clearly. Say which animals you will consider and give useful details about outdoor space, parking, shared areas and any reasonable conditions. Accurate information helps responsible renters decide whether to apply and avoids wasted viewings for everyone.

Paw Keys welcomes local landlords and agents with homes where pet permission is a real part of the offer. Clear, honest details give pet owners a fair chance to put forward a suitable application.
