Renting with pets in Andover

What living in Andover is like

Andover is a market town in the northern part of Test Valley, Hampshire. Its centre brings together the main shopping streets, public services, library, theatre, leisure facilities and bus station. Away from the centre, the town includes established residential districts, newer neighbourhoods and employment areas such as Portway and Walworth.

That spread matters when you are renting with a pet. A home described as being in Andover may be close to the centre, on the edge of town or in a newer development. Think about the places you will use most often: the railway station, hospital, supermarkets, workplace and daily walking routes. The most suitable area will depend on those journeys as much as on the property itself.

The River Anton runs through Andover and links green spaces including Town Mills, Watermills Park and Rooksbury Mill. Parts of the town therefore have a riverside or wetland character, while other areas feel more urban, suburban or recently developed. That gives pet owners different types of walk to consider, but paths, water edges and local signs still need checking before you rely on a route.

Andover neighbourhoods to consider

Property listings can use ward names, estate names, road names or nearby landmarks. Andover’s town council wards are Downlands, Harroway, Millway, Romans and St Mary’s. These are local-government divisions, however, and are not always the names used by residents or letting listings when describing a home.

Useful search terms include East Anton, Augusta Park, The Chariots, Saxon Heights, Picket Twenty, Picket Piece, Charlton, Enham, Knights Enham, Drove Estate, Roman Way, King Arthur’s Way, Cricketer’s Way, Artist’s Way and Saxon Fields.

Augusta Park is a neighbourhood within the wider East Anton development. East Anton, Augusta Park, Picket Twenty and Picket Piece may appear as separate search areas even though they form part of the wider Andover urban area. It is also worth remembering that Ludgershall, Tidworth, Whitchurch and Stockbridge are nearby towns or settlements, not Andover neighbourhoods.

Central homes can suit renters who want the High Street, Chantry Centre, bus station and riverside parks nearby. A home in a newer area may appeal if you prefer a recently developed setting or want open space close by, but check how easily you can reach everyday services. Ask about allocated and visitor parking, communal maintenance, broadband, estate-management charges and any remaining building work or planned facilities.

If you are looking at Picket Twenty, check whether your usual driving route passes through the bus gate around Picket Twenty and London Road. Read the signs and restrictions for the journey you would actually make rather than assuming that a route shown on a map will be suitable.

Shopping, food and pet supplies

Andover’s central shopping area is built around the High Street, much of which is pedestrianised in the central section. The covered Chantry Centre adjoins the High Street and Chantry Street. Bridge Street and London Street add more shops, food, leisure and everyday services.

Identifiable food-shopping options include Tesco Extra on River Way, Asda on Anton Mill Road, Sainsbury’s on Shepherds Spring Lane, Aldi on Weyhill Road, Lidl on Western Avenue and Iceland on Bridge Street. Morrisons Daily has locations at the Chantry Centre and Atholl Court, while Waitrose is in the Chantry Centre. Check the details directly when planning a viewing, as stores and occupiers can change.

Enham Arch Retail Park on Newbury Road is useful for pet owners because it includes Pets at Home and Vets for Pets Andover. Pets at Home lists pet supplies, click-and-collect, grooming, licensed medicines, nutrition consultations and in-store veterinary services. Vets for Pets Andover lists parking and services including health checks, microchipping, neutering and dental care.

Anton Veterinary Centre is another Andover veterinary practice. Its information includes routine and emergency-care provision. Before choosing a home, check the actual route to the practice you would use, particularly if you do not drive or have a pet that needs regular appointments.

Getting around Andover

Andover railway station is at Station Approach. It has bus and taxi connections, parking, cycle storage and passenger-assistance facilities. There is some step-free access, but the station has no lifts. Renters with mobility needs, or anyone who regularly travels with bulky pet equipment, should inspect the platform-access arrangements carefully before choosing a nearby home.

The main bus station is in the town centre. Local Stagecoach services connect the centre with King Arthur’s Way, Roman Way, Cricketer’s Way, East Anton, Augusta Park, Picket Twenty, Charlton, Artist’s Way, Saxon Fields, Drove Estate, Andover War Memorial Hospital, River Way and Picket Piece.

Regional services run towards Ludgershall, Tidworth, Bulford, Amesbury, Salisbury, Winchester, Whitchurch and Basingstoke. Route names alone do not show how useful a service will be for a particular home, so check the timetable and stop for the exact address.

Some parts of Northern Test Valley also have Connect Transport on Demand. This is a pre-bookable service that requires registration, rather than a normal fixed-route bus. Listed Andover town-centre stops include the railway station, bus station, Andover War Memorial Hospital and Bridge Street.

Portway and Walworth are employment areas outside the central shopping area. If you work there, compare the cycling, bus and driving route from each property. The same applies if you regularly need the hospital, station or a supermarket. Andover’s services are spread across different parts of the town, so a neighbourhood name will not tell you everything about a daily journey.

Green spaces and everyday life with a pet

Beech Hurst Park on Weyhill Road has seating, mature planting and parking. Folly Pocket Park is a riverside open space beside the River Anton and Western Avenue. Town Mills Pocket Park is beside the Chantry Centre, with a riverside walk towards Rooksbury Mill.

Watermills Park has play and recreation facilities, access towards the River Anton and a route towards Rooksbury Mill Park. Vigo Road Recreation Ground has play facilities, tennis courts, a bowling green and seating. The Ladies Walk is a tree-lined route on the south-eastern edge of town, with views over Andover and seating along the way.

For more nature-focused walks, look at Rooksbury Mill Local Nature Reserve, Anton Lakes Local Nature Reserve, Harewood Common and Charlton Lakeside. These places include lakes, springs, meadows, wetlands, chalk grassland and paths. The Test Way is a longer-distance walking route through the wider Test Valley.

Do not treat a dog bin as proof that a dog can run off lead. Rules can vary between parks and nature sites, while lakes, rivers, livestock and wildlife all need care. Check signs at entrances and along paths. If you are considering a home near Rooksbury Mill, Anton Lakes or Charlton Lakeside, walk the route yourself where possible. Look at the surface, road crossings, water edges, seasonal conditions and whether it suits your dog.

At the property, check whether the garden is genuinely enclosed and whether gates latch securely. Also consider balconies, shared gardens, communal entrances and the distance to a suitable first walk. A landlord allowing pets does not automatically make the home convenient for a pet’s daily routine.

How to prepare for a pet-friendly rental search

Start with the parts of Andover that fit your everyday needs, then widen the search if necessary. Search using Andover alongside the relevant district, estate or road name. Be clear about the pet you have: “pets considered” may mean something different from a landlord who welcomes a dog, two cats or a larger breed.

Ask practical questions early. Is the landlord happy with the type and number of pets? Is the garden secure? Are there rules for a communal entrance, shared garden, balcony or lift? Can the pet be left alone for the hours your work requires? Are there conditions about flooring, cleaning or outdoor space?

It is sensible to prepare information that may help a landlord decide. Keep details of your pet’s age, size, temperament and care routine to hand. You may also want to explain how you manage exercise, noise, insurance and veterinary care. The important point is to be accurate and upfront rather than agreeing to terms that will not work for your household.

Set a Paw Keys alert using your preferred area, property type and pet details. Suitable listings can appear at different times, so an alert saves you from repeatedly checking every search. It does not replace checking the full listing and asking the landlord or agent to confirm the pet terms, garden arrangements and other conditions before you proceed.

Nearby alternatives to Andover

If Andover is not the right fit, you could also compare Whitchurch, Basingstoke, Newbury, Salisbury, Romsey, Stockbridge, Ludgershall and Tidworth. These are not Andover neighbourhoods, but they may suit renters who can trade some convenience in one area for a different setting, transport connection or choice of homes.

Whitchurch is a smaller North Hampshire town on the River Test with its own railway station and connections towards London. Basingstoke is a larger Hampshire town with Festival Place, The Anvil and wider retail, leisure and employment provision. Newbury is a Berkshire market town with canal-side areas and access to the North Wessex Downs countryside.

Salisbury offers a larger historic centre and wider urban services. Romsey is a Test Valley market town with riverside surroundings and its own town-centre setting. Stockbridge is a smaller Test Valley settlement with a riverside high street and countryside around it. Ludgershall and Tidworth may be practical alternatives for people who need access to the Andover–Salisbury corridor or military-related employment areas.

Final checks before choosing a home

Before applying, compare the actual address with the places you use most. Check the walk to green space, the road crossings, access to veterinary care, the route to work and the nearest bus stop. For homes near the River Anton, Anton Lakes or Rooksbury Mill, look at water edges, path conditions, wildlife, livestock and any seasonal access arrangements.

On newer developments such as Augusta Park and Picket Twenty, ask about parking, visitor spaces, communal maintenance, estate-management charges where applicable, broadband and any remaining construction. If accessibility matters, inspect Andover station rather than assuming that “step-free” means every platform or route can be reached without stairs.

The best pet-friendly rental is not simply one where the landlord says yes to an animal. It should also fit the walks, journeys, services and practical arrangements that your household will rely on every day.
